West Kensington Home Design Project

Heritage Architects in Kensington are challenged when renovating within conservation zones or heritage items when on sloping sites and with no level access to the rear yard.

Addition & Restoration to A Grand Victorian Terrace | West Kensington Conservation Zone

Site Sloping To The Front

This a new ground and 1st floor contemporary addition to the rear of a grand Victorian terrace house. The entire home was extensively refurbished throughout while the front & side if the remaining Victorian part was repaint & front balcony replaced. The Victorian part was reverted from a dual occupancy to a single dwelling.

Principal Design features

Broad span functional connection between rear communal room & rear & side yard passage allows an almost seamless visual connection between inside and out, while bi fold are in the open position.

Additional windows are fitted to the remaining Victorian part to allow greater solar gain to warm & eliminate interior rooms.

Positioning of new authentic timber windows within the existing part allows winter solar ingress throughout the day.

Highlight clearstory windows on the new rear extension are fitted over a light shelf - perimeter awning allows reflected sunlight to graduate down the raked ceiling.

Passive means of heating & cooling are employed by highlight clerestory windows & glazed doors allowing direct sunlight to penetrate deep within the ground floor slab.

How we create Thermal efficiency Using high thermal mass

The floor slab & brick wall stores heat from winter sun for a slow release of heat inside which reduces heating bills. This often also works in reverse in summer as the floor slab conditions the space to be cooler in summer.
